Canberra has impressed me so far this year and not because it is really any different (these events have been running for years) but because this year I have actually starting attending events in Canberra. So far I have blogged about two events I have attended and quite enjoyed (links below) but this weekend in Canberra is quite a big one. Its our annual Skyfire night which on its own draws more than 100,000 people to the lake just for a few hours of entertainment and 20-30 odd minutes of fireworks. Unfortunately this year I’m not attending but I’m sure there will be no shortage of photos the next few days if you search #visitcanberra on social media.
What I did manage to attend however was Canberra’s annual Balloon Spectacular and Art Not Apart events also held today. This mornings Saturday 6am start was totally worth it to see the hot air balloons inflate and tether on the lawns of Old Parliament House. Yes I said tether.. to my extreme disappointment they decided for the last two days that the weather was not quite good enough to actually let the balloons fly so I did the best I could with what I was given and took a few pics of them hovering just above the ground.
A little later in the day I headed over to Canberra’s new hangout New Acton, Acton Park and Westside Acton Park to explore the Art, Not Apart festival for my first time which was starting at 1pm. There were galleries, artists selling work on the street, people performing in all areas, access to some of the buildings, a suitcase rummage, live graffiti and plenty of interactive displays. If you like a few hours of leisurely observing then it is a worth while event.
